It’s hard to climb a broken ladder
With missing rungs and a base that’s shattered
And the rest has come unglued
It’s hard to walk that extra mile
The road is long and the sky won’t smile
It’s feeling low-down and blue

I have searched for answers high and low
And there nowhere to be found
I think I’m standing right side up
But I could be upside down
Everything remains the same
Down through the centuries
As I fumble through my pockets
Searching for a dream

It’s hard to feel much confidence
When the slats are gone in your picket fence
And the windows are sealed up tight
Where I heard a hiding child cry
Who lost their way back to the light
Here’s hoping that their star burns bright

I have searched for answers high and low
And there nowhere to be found
Sure could use a humane touch
Anyone humane around
So I hold this woman next to me
On those cold and senseless nights
And sink down in the wishing well
Until the morning light

It’s hard to find the right reasons
To what we all have to face head on
Who are we and where did we come from?
I watched your smile turn to a frown
When all the leaves fell to the ground
In a cadence with the earth and the sun

I have searched for answers high and low
There nowhere to be found
What IS just IS I said aloud
Awestruck by it’s sound
And all the worlds that we create
That are so far from our sight
Are there for us to imagine
Until we get it right.
