It seems like all I’d see of you
Is your back going out the door?
I used to wonder why sometimes
But don’t really care anymore?
How you came to be that way
Angry, hateful, and cold
But I know deep down inside of me
It’s better left untold.
I never saw you smile
At something good I’d do
A “ mark my words for the wise”
Is all I got from you?
An’ as each new morning turned to night
Up above my bed
The cruel hand you dealt me that day
Still plays out in my head
The times you found no fault in me
Are so far and few between
An’ as life rolls down this lonesome road
I can hear a faint heartbeat
Calling out to let me know
That it’s beat, battered, and torn
Just like this world we live in
Dying to be reborn.
This rain filled day reminds me of
A world once overflowed
So where do you come from and who are you
And what are the dreams that you hold?
I’ll follow this rhyme and keep it’s time
And rock this child to sleep
And from time to time as the season’s change
I share this child’s grief.
